The programs that the Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation (SCOF) sponsor also support the programs of the Canyon Country Optimist Club which help youth in need. The SCOF sponsors Safety Town – Santa Clarita, a safety education program for young children, Scholarships for High Schools Students who provide exceptional community and school service, and Help for Youth – in – need.
The Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation’s “Safety Town” camp is a five-day safety education program for children who will be entering kindergarten (ages 4 1/2 to 6 years) in the Santa Clarita Valley. In 2019, the camp will be held at Charles Helmers Elementary School in Saugus Union School District on July 15 – 19 and Jul 22 – 26, 2019. During the camp, taught by California-credentialed teachers, children learn through repetitive, interactive instructional play, essential safety skills they will use in their everyday lives – at home and at school.
Safety Town is a miniature city built to the scale of a small child, assembled within a secured playground, with traffic light, street and stop signs, striped walkways, crosswalks and streets. Children learn how to safely cross the street and how to obey traffic signals while walking and while driving miniature cars, complete with safety belts. Videos, craft projects, songs and games reinforce the safe conduct rules the children have learned. Children who participate in Safety Town receive a tee shirt and a school bag with school supplies they will need for elementary school. Scholarships are available for families who qualify.

The Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation offers three categories of scholarships to help Santa Clarita’s youth and families-in-need and bring out the best in Santa Clarita’s kids. We offer scholarships to high school students who have performed exceptional service to their community and school, Safety Town scholarships for families-in-need, and we support many programs that assist youth-in- need.
Scholarships for High Schools Students providing Exceptional Service
Each year the Foundation is proud to give $750 scholarships to graduating high school students in Santa Clarita. In 2019, we will award 8 scholarships. Students who have provided exception service to the community and school and have a 2.5 GPA are eligible to apply. In the application, students must describe their exceptional service to their community and school (beyond community service credit earned toward high school graduation). Students should plan to attend a four-year college or university, community college or vocational program. Once the scholarships are awarded, students are asked to write a letter to the Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation and describe how the funds will be used toward their education.
To apply or for additional information about the scholarship go to the Santa Clarita Valley Scholarship Foundation at SCVSF.org.
Safety Town Scholarships
A limited number of Safety Town scholarships are available for families-in-need and who qualify. Parents/guardians who register their children to attend the Safety Town – Santa Clarita camp in July 2020, and who meet the criteria, may have all or part of the $150 registration fee waived.

Help for Youth-in-Need
There are times when Santa Clarita Valley youth-serving groups may be in need of financial assistance. A request may be submitted to a member of the Board of Directors of the Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation Board or the Canyon Country Optimist Club for review. This type of support may be awarded only once or on an ongoing basis. We continue to annually support a variety of programs; following are a few examples of those we supported in 2018:
- Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Childhood Cancer We donated more than $3,500 for the purchase of Kare Kits to give to newly diagnosed child cancer patients and their families in local hospitals.
- Santa Clarita Parks and Recreation’s S.C.O.R.E. Program We donated $2,500 to enable in-need youth to participate in recreational events and programs.
- Carousel Ranch – Equestrian Therapy for disabled children We donated $1,000 to this organization that provides developmental therapeutic and recreational programs for disabled and disadvantaged children through horses.
- Throughout the year, we will provide financial aid to local families in need who have children with debilitating illnesses or other similarly profound life challenges .
