Session 1: June 25 – 29

Session 2: July 9 – 13

Session 3: July 16 – 20

The Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation’s “Safety Town” camp is a fun, week-long (3 1/2 hours per day) safety education and awareness program for children ages 4 ½ to 6 years of age who live in the Santa Clarita Valley. Three camps will be held at Charles Helmers Elementary School on June 25 – 29, July 9 – 13 and July 16 – 20. 2018, from 9:00AM to 12:30PM daily.

Safety Town is a miniature city built to the scale of a small child, that will be assembled within a secured playground, with traffic light, street and stop signs, striped walkways, crosswalks and streets. Under the guidance of California credentialed teacher, trained volunteer counselors, and local community safety professionals, 40 children at each camp will learn and practice essential safety skills they will use in their everyday lives – at home, at school, in the community and in the future. Multimedia craft projects, songs and interactive play reinforce the safe conduct rules the children have learned.

Topics discussed during the week include:

  • Pedestrian safety

  • Personal and Home safety

  • Fire safety / 9-1-1

  • Strangers

  • Animal safety

  • Water safety

  • Earthquake and Disaster safety

  • Playground safety

  • Bicycle & Wheel safety

  • Vehicle and Passenger safety

  • Medicine & Drugs

On each day of the camp, children are visited by safety professionals from community agencies; they talk and give demonstrations to the students. Local agencies represented have included, the

  • L.A County Sheriff’s Department

  • L.A. County Fire Department

  • Santa Clarita Transit

  • Ekata Training Center (self defense)

  • California Highway Patrol

  • City of Santa Clarita Crossing Guards

  • City of Santa Clarita Lifeguards

  • American Red Cross

  • Guide Dogs of America

  • Child Passenger Safety Technician

Daily, parents receive safety topic information, their children’s safety arts/crafts, and school materials; at camp’s end, parents receive an assessment of their children’s learning of safety rules and skills and those needing continued reinforcement. A parent/guardian must attend the orientation meeting on Monday of the scheduled session.

Please be aware, Safety Town – Santa Clarita reserves the right to cancel sessions dependent upon enrollment. If this occurs, you will be notified approximately two weeks prior to the beginning of the session date to revise your session selection if space permits.

Application for Youth Volunteers

Make a difference in a young child’s life! Youth volunteers are needed to serve as “Counselors in Training” (CITs). CITs assist and teach safety education to young children, and earn community service hours. CITs must be mature and responsible youth who are willing to work daily with 2 – 3 children, ages 4.5 to 6 years of age. CITs assist with safety and injury prevention instruction, craft projects, playground activities, Town Time and modeling of appropriate safe behavior. CITs are team players.

CIT Qualifications:

Volunteer applicants must be students entering 8th – 12th grade (13 to 17 years of age) who are mature and positive role models. CITs must genuinely enjoy being with children and have an interest in their safety. While this program is intended to be fun for both children and volunteers, a CIT’s role is to take responsibility as volunteer seriously, and to conduct oneself in a responsible manner. It is essential that a CIT is a team player, shows respect to others, and is a positive role model. The children will rely on his/her CIT; it is imperative that the CIT attend every day. Other guidelines of the program will be outlined at the mandatory 2-hour CIT Orientation, to be held at Helmers Elementary School on Friday, June 22 from 10:00AM to noon. Even if you have volunteered in previous years, you are required to attend.
