Safety Town is a miniature city built to the scale of a small child, that will be assembled within a secured playground, with traffic light, street and stop signs, striped walkways, crosswalks and streets. Under the guidance of California credentialed teacher, trained volunteer counselors, and local community safety professionals, 40 children at each camp will learn and practice essential safety skills they will use in their everyday lives – at home, at school, in the community and in the future. Multimedia craft projects, songs and interactive play reinforce the safe conduct rules the children have learned.

Topics discussed during the week include:

  • Pedestrian safety

  • Personal and Home safety

  • Fire safety / 9-1-1

  • Strangers

  • Animal safety

  • Water safety

  • Earthquake and Disaster safety

  • Playground safety

  • Bicycle & Wheel safety

  • Vehicle and Passenger safety

  • Medicine & Drugs

On each day of the camp, children are visited by safety professionals from community agencies; they talk and give demonstrations to the students. Local agencies represented have included, the

  • L.A County Sheriff’s Department

  • L.A. County Fire Department

  • Santa Clarita Transit

  • Ekata Training Center (self defense)

  • California Highway Patrol

  • City of Santa Clarita Crossing Guards

  • City of Santa Clarita Lifeguards

  • American Red Cross

  • Guide Dogs of America

  • Child Passenger Safety Technician

Daily, parents receive safety topic information, their children’s safety arts/crafts, and school materials; at camp’s end, parents receive an assessment of their children’s learning of safety rules and skills and those needing continued reinforcement.

Opportunities for Youth Volunteers
(Counselors-in-Training)

Make a difference in a young child’s life! Youth volunteers are needed to serve as “Counselors in Training” (CITs). CITs assist and teach safety education to young children, and earn community service hours. CITs must be mature and responsible youth who are willing to work daily with 2 – 3 children, ages 4.5 to 6 years of age. CITs assist with safety and injury prevention instruction, craft projects, playground activities, Town Time and modeling of appropriate safe behavior. CITs are team players.

CIT Qualifications:

Volunteer applicants must be students entering 8th – 12th grade (13 to 17 years of age) who are mature and positive role models. CITs must genuinely enjoy being with children and have an interest in their safety. While this program is intended to be fun for both children and volunteers, a CIT’s role is to take responsibility as volunteer seriously, and to conduct oneself in a responsible manner. It is essential that a CIT is a team player, shows respect to others, and is a positive role model. Because each child will rely on his/her CIT; it is imperative that the CIT attend every day. Other guidelines of the program will be outlined at a mandatory 2-hour CIT Orientation, to be held at the host school on a date and time to be announced.
